About remote standoff

Surveylab has wrapped into one compact handheld a laser rangefinder with a powerful GPS receiver, 3D compass and 5MP digital camera. To this we add a PDA running Windows® Mobile 6. This creates our highly versatile, multi-functional ikeGPS capture tool with one very unique, defining feature – users can standoff and capture inaccessible positional data, take multiple geotagged photographs, and attribute information without having to get right 'on the spot'. Remote standoff makes data capture a lot easier and safer. Invest wisely. If you'd like to learn what remote standoff means to you and how it puts money back in your pocket, whistle up an online presentation with Terry Ross, VP International Sales. info@ikeGPS.com

Plant City, Florida Case Study

Florida's Plant City has contributed a case study on using ikeGPS to capture data and prepare an inventory of engineering assets including stormwater outlets, roadway culverts and sewers. Zlatko (Zack) Knezevic, GIS Coordinator for the Engineering Division says in the study, "Not only does the ikeGPS help us capture more data in a shorter timeframe, but it's much safer for our team. With the unique rangefinder inspectors can capture asset data without standing on busy streets, wading in stormwater drainage ditches, or climbing steep banks." Zack is now trialing ikeGPS for inventories and re-establishment records for streetlights, signposts, traffic signals and intersection signage. For a copy of the case study, please contact Terry Ross, VP International Sales. terry.ross@ikeGPS.com.

Team Surveylab

Philip Owusu, Customer Service Coordinator, Surveylab USA

Philip joined the Surveylab in Washington DC in August 2008. He has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Minor in Business Administration. He has developed wide-ranging product and GIS experience providing sales and technical support.

He recently conducted a comparative data capture field trial for a water & sewer authority. ikeGPS performed much better than competing GPS capture devices and earned the big tick for picking up more satellites, obtaining the GPS fix faster, and not losing a fix at any time throughout the trial. Dayton University interpret New Zealand’s geologic history and active tectonics

In May 2010 Surveylab hosted ikeGPS customer Dr. Allen McGrew of the Department of Geology at The University of Dayton in Ohio.

Dr. McGrew, together with Professor/Researcher Umesh Haritashya, Associate Professor Dan Goldman, and fifteen geology students are visiting New Zealand to learn and apply geological field methods to describe and interpret New Zealand’s geologic history and active tectonics.

The course will involve three major components: an exploration of the volcanic centers of the Taupo volcanic zone in the North Island, field study of the stratigraphy and structural geology of the Abel-Tasman and Nelson Districts of the South Island, and investigation of the Pleistocene history of New Zealand, including the history of glacial retreat in the Southern Alps of New Zealand and the stratigraphic record of sea-level change on the North Island.

Dayton University use ikeGPS data collection instruments as an all-purpose geological field mapping tool to locate not only the position of rock units in the field, but also to collect georeferenced field photographs and record field observations.

Their data is imported automatically into ESRI ArcGIS to build and visualize the geologic map as they work. Dayton also use IkeGPS instruments to document the field context of localities where they collect samples, and the standoff remote capture capability of the ike1000 is valuable in mapping inaccessible features such as cliff faces.

ikeGPS Integrates Standard Mine Action Software

Wellington, New Zealand, November 27, 2009 – Surveylab today announced that its ikeGPS range now supports data collection software for mine action created by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD). Utilizing the remote capture capability of ikeGPS, field staff working in many areas of the world now affected with mines and other ERW (explosive remnants of war) can complete data collection tasks whilst remaining safely outside suspected hazardous areas. Combining a GPS with rangefinder and compass, and with a completely integrated workflow, ikeGPS lets a user quickly and simply capture remote points from a safe and discreet location.

The data collection software is a component of the larger Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA) suite of software tools developed by GICHD for mine action. Based on ESRI’s ArcEngine™ and utilizing a MySQL™ database engine, IMSMA is a powerful information management tool. Following a collaborative development program, IMSMA Mobile, based on ESRI’s ArcPad™, now runs on Surveylab’s versatile ikeGPS data collection device. IMSMA Mobile allows users to take maps and data to the field and complete a variety of mine action field reports. With ikeGPS running IMSMA Mobile, the user can now reliably collect coordinate data from a safe distance to accurately map minefields and other hazards.

Surveylab is pleased to participate in mine action, and to provide technology and expertise to those organizations active in dealing with the threat of landmines, unexploded ordnance and other explosive remnants of war. ikeGPS presents a unique advantage to the men and women working in the field of mine action, whether they be military, civilian contractors or NGOs: in providing a rugged and reliable tool for users to capture geospatial data from a distance, ikeGPS keeps them safer and away from the suspected hazardous areas.

“Using ikeGPS for humanitarian demining operations is a logical choice – users perform data collection tasks for land release safely and quickly,” commented Leon Toorenburg Surveylab CEO. “Now we have introduced an ikeGPS software solution that adds IMSMA Mobile meaning ikeGPS is integrated into the complete IMSMA system to plan, manage, report and map the results of survey and field data collection.”

About Surveylab: Based in Wellington, New Zealand and McLean, Virginia, Surveylab develops and manufactures ikeGPS, the world's first integrated GPS/laser/camera device for GIS data capture. ikeGPS enables faster, safer, and more efficient data acquisition through remote photo positioning. Multiple targets up to 1,000 meters distant, especially in inaccessible or unsafe locations, can be accurately positioned from a single location. Users such as international NGOs, oil & gas industry, utilities, forestry, military engineers, and public works agencies have been using ikeGPS for years in situations where targets are difficult to reach or safety is a concern. More at www.ikeGPS.com

About IMSMA: IMSMA software, which supports data collection, storage, reporting, and mapping, provides an off-the-shelf GIS, database, and analysis toolset designed specifically for humanitarian mine action projects. The software was developed by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD, www.gichd.org), which provides it at no charge to the national authority set up by a country to manage demining operations.
